Consists largely of copies of outgoing correspondence generated by Lumpkin after his retirement from banking in 1981 as chairman, president, and CEO of South Carolina National Corporation, successor to South Carolina National Bank. Files document Lumpkin's involvement with Brookgreen Gardens, specifically as trustee and member of the Finance Committee working to secure additional funding, and his role in the establishment of a Brookgreen Gardens Award, formally named the American Achievement Award, which was presented first in 1986 to Donald Peterson, chairman and CEO of Ford Motor Company, and then in 1987 to Chief Justice Warren Burger of the U.S. Supreme Court. Other materials relate to Lumpkin's advocacy of the South Carolina Foundation of Independent Colleges, his role as chairman of the Foundation's Corporate Support Program, and his interest in state and national politics.
